Overview

The design basis of the Paterson class of complete starbases has its roots in Zeugma base which was the Dominion’s first operational starbase in the galaxy.  By comparison the much older Zeugma type starbase was a one-off design that over several decades grew far beyond its original design parameters due to its modular nature and its ability to change orbit without the assistance of towing starships. Unfortunately, as the station grew in size it had to keep moving further away from the planet it was supposed to be orbiting as its new mass would often put the structural integrity of the station at risk because not all of the station was designed to handle the extra mass.  In the 2080’s work began on a new starbase design that matched the Zeugma type’s capacity with critical improvements, this design would come to be known as the Paterson class starbase. Unlike its precursor, the Paterson class was designed from the ground up with an expected habitation capacity of 500,000 and a limited modular features so that the starbase could never exceed its own core structural integrity. Special attention in the design was granted to the inclusion of a large internalized docking ring that could house a normal capacity of sixty vessels and an additional external docking capacity of another fifty vessels. In addition to the capitol vessel capacity of the starbase one-hundred and twenty external dropship docks and six-hundred small craft squadron bays (2,400 small craft) were included in the design to handle maintenance, ship traffic and other aspects expected of a major starbase. Also, the station regularly operates nine hundred fighter squadrons (10,800 starfighters) allowing it to project a considerable amount of force and ensure its zone of control.

To coordinate all of this, the Paterson class starbase is equipped with hemispherical SAINT type sensor arrays. The SAINT system itself is one of the best sensor systems the dominion has produced despite taking nearly forty years of testing and design to finally put the system in the Dominion military’s arsenal. In the advent of a critical failure Paterson class starbases all have an isolated secondary SAINT sensor system of equivalent power to ensure that at the very least vessel traffic is always managed precisely and efficiently. The presence of two sensor systems of equivalent power that are isolated from each other grants the Command of a Patterson class starbase the ability to overpower jamming, and electronic warfare as the systems themselves are adaptive and individually weigh seven million tons making them larger than a lot of starships. The sensors aren’t the only thing on the starbase with a built-in redundancy; the station also possesses two structural integrity systems once of which is auxiliary. In general, the only times the two SIF systems are operational at the same time would be during a combat event or when the ship is making a hyperfield jump at its maximum range. Much like the sensors the SIF systems are independent of each other which makes them harder to disable. To further protect the Dominion’s investment in such a large orbital facility a total of forty-two million tons of armor protects the starbase while its regenerative internal structures are reinforced as much as is possible. As with all Dominion military vessels the Paterson class starbase also has sensor scattering composites incorporated into in to its hull and internal structure. Unlike dominion vessels though, the composites for the sensor scattering effect in the Paterson’s hull make heavier use of Pyril because the station encounters more traffic than a military warship is expected to. The armament of the Paterson class starbase is quite significant and has led some to refer to it as a space fortress. The primary armament of the Paterson class consists of sixty-four dual mount Pulse AGML mark IV directed energy weapons.  Secondary armament consists of One hundred and ninety-two dual mount AMP-ASM mark X launch systems, seventy-two dual mount type G Autoglaives and seventy-two dual mount Light-18M DRAIL kinetic energy weapons. The tertiary armament of the starbase is comprehensive and is comprised of three thousand and six hundred single-mount QF12 AGML arrays, three thousand and six hundred single-mount AMP-AAF/8i launch systems and, three thousand and six hundred single-mount Type 8/AA DRAIL kinetic energy weapons. As a final note to the complete armament of the Paterson Class as part of the defensive systems of the starbase the Paterson class has eight Spatial Distortion arrays installed in its primary facings to lower the probability of enemy fire hitting the starbase.
Here it is, the single largest Dominion-made object in the galaxy, the Paterson Class Starbase. Ten have been made, so that's one per district of Dominion space with exception to the capitol district where two have been built. Each one is a functional symbol of the industrial strength of the Dominion and despite the massive scale each is self-propelled.
